The Best FIFA Football Awards is FIFA’s flagship award ceremony used to recognise the best players and achievements in world football each year.
The nominations were whittled down and superstars from the game were celebrated on Monday night with awards for achievements in men’s and women’s football.
The well-attended ceremony was held in Paris.
Argentina and Paris St-Germain forward Lionel Messi and Barcelona’s Alexia Putellas were named men’s player of the year and women’s player of the year respectively at the 2022 Best Fifa Awards.
Messi beat French forwards Kylian Mbappe and Karim Benzema to the prize while Alexia Putellas won from the list that included Arsenal and England’s Beth Mead and Alex Morgan of San Diego Wave and the USA.
At the ceremony in Paris, Lionel Scaloni, who led Argentina to their third World Cup title, was named men’s coach of the year.
Scaloni beat Pep Guardiola, who guided Manchester City to a sixth Premier League title and Real Madrid’s Champions League-winning boss Carlo Ancelotti to the honour.
The night also saw a release of the Fifpro men’s world XI which has Thibaut Courtois in the goalpost and Morrocan Achraf Hakimi, Virgil van Dijk and Joao Cancelo as defenders.
The list also had Kevin De Bruyne, Luka Modric and Casemiro in the midfield with Lionel Messi, Erling Haaland and France duo Karim Benzema and Kylian Mbappe leading the attack.
