TEWU-TUC calls off strike
The Teachers and Educational Workers’ Union (TEWU) of the TUC (Ghana) has officially called off its nationwide strike.
The union declared a strike on Friday, September 19, 2025, following the government’s delay in concluding and signing the agreement on their conditions of service.
TEWU, in a statement, confirmed that recent discussions with the government have been productive, and measures are being taken to address their concerns.
The union is expected to meet FWSC on Tuesday, October 7, 2025, to proceed with negotiations, conclude, and sign the various Conditions of Service of the affected institutions and TEWU of TUC membership.
Addressing the media on Wednesday, October 1, 2025, the General Secretary of TEWU-TUC, King James Azortibah, cautioned that the union would resume industrial action if the scheduled meeting with the government on Tuesday did not yield positive results.
“TEWU has decided to suspend the indefinite strike action, with effect from today, Wednesday, 1st October 2025, to allow for further discussions and implementation of the agreed terms.
“All TEWU members in the institutions above are expected to resume work by Thursday, 2nd October 2025. All those who might have travelled outside their jurisdiction should report not later than Monday, 6th October 2025.
“We emphasise that this is a suspension and not a call-off of the strike. We hope the FWSC and employer institutions will honour their side of the agreement, so that TEWU is not forced to do otherwise”.
