The Teachers and Educational Workers Union (TEWU) of the Trades Union Congress (TUC) has declared an indefinite strike effective Friday, September 20, 2024.

TEWU joins the Senior Staff Association of Universities of Ghana (SSA-UoG) in the industrial action to demand improved working conditions from the government.

The group contend that the government has failed to address their demands despite several negotiations.

In a statement issued on September 18, TEWU said despite an approval letter from the Ministry of Finance, the Controller and Accountant General’s Department (CAGD) has failed to implement the vehicle maintenance and off-campus allowances.

The union added that the government has failed to recalculate and pay interest accrued from delayed Tier Two deductions to the union’s scheme from January 2010 to 2016.

“In view of the above issues, we have resolved to embark on an indefinite industrial action from Friday, September 20, 2024, until all aforementioned outstanding issues are resolved,” the statement concluded.

Meanwhile, the Senior Staff Association of Universities of Ghana has been on strike since Monday, September 16, 2024.

Declaring the strike, its National Chairman, George Ansong, the group indicated that the government failed to meet their demands for better service conditions despite reaching an agreement.

The association had previously embarked on a strike in January 2024 but suspended it after the government promised to honour their promises.

However, the government has reneged on these commitments.

All administrative offices, libraries, hospitals, and security facilities on public university campuses have been closed.
