Tema Youth Association To Demonstrate Over Death Of Fishermen

The Tema Youth Association says it will organise a demonstration following the demise of two fishermen after their boat clashed with that of the security of the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA).

The two fishermen were said to be part of a 12-member group who were on a ritual Homowo fishing expedition when a patrol boat from the GPHA rammed into their canoe at the Tema Port anchorage, causing it to capsize.

However, the GPHA denied that assertion, saying no such incident happened at sea.

In a press statement, the youth group urged the Tema Traditional Council and relevant stakeholders to organise a memorial service in honour of the fishermen who perished at sea.

“During this challenging time, we encourage everyone in the community to come together, offer support, and stand in solidarity with the families affected by this tragedy. Let us cherish the memories of the departed fishermen and hence their legacy by promoting harmony, understanding and safety within our beloved community,” the statement read.

They also called for a thorough investigation to unravel the truth and put measures in place to forestall such an occurrence.

“Furthermore, the Tema Youth Association urges the relevant authorities to engage in dialogue with the fishing community to address their concerns and work collaboratively towards improved safety measures on the water. We believe that effective communication and cooperation between the maritime authorities and the fishing community are vital to fostering a safer and more secure moment for all stakeholders,” they added.

Meanwhile, the Tema Metropolitan Security Committee (MESEC) has set up a five-member committee to probe the circumstances that led to the incident.

The committee, which is made up of representatives from the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the police, the Ghana National Fire Service, the National Investigations Bureau, the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) and the Tema Metropolitan Assembly, has five days to submit its report.
