Tema Central Re-Collation halted amid chaos and threats to returning officer
The re-collation of parliamentary election results for Tema Central has been suspended after the Returning Officer Mr. Brobbey refused to proceed, citing threats to his safety and that of his family.
The disruption began when the National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary candidate, Ebi Bright, demanded a full re-collation of votes from all polling stations, in line with a court order.
She insisted that the Electoral Commission (EC) restart the process rather than continuing from where it previously ended.
Tempers flared as Ebi Bright and NDC MP Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor protested the EC’s refusal to comply with their demands. The situation escalated, leading both NDC representatives to storm out of the collation center in frustration, effectively stalling the process.
Speaking to the media, Mr. Brobbey explained his decision to pause the proceedings, emphasising the need for all parties to be present to reach a compromise.
“The threats on my family and myself are too great to ignore. I cannot risk my life,” he stated.
The incident underscores the heightened tensions surrounding the Tema Central collation, prompting heavy security presence at the Greater Accra Regional EC office to maintain order.
Meanwhile, the EC successfully completed the re-collation of results for the Obuasi East constituency, declaring NPP’s Patrick Boakye Yiadom the winner by a narrow 19-vote margin.
This forms part of a broader re-collation exercise in nine constituencies aimed at resolving disputes over procedural irregularities in the initial tally.
