Deputy Education Minister, Clement Apaak, has announced a 20% salary increase for teachers who accept assignments in rural and underserved communities.
Dr Apaak made this announcement during a courtesy visit by top achievers of the Basic Education Certificate Examination, emphasising the government’s commitment to addressing disparities in the nation’s education system.
He indicated that, as part of the government’s ‘Teacher Dabre’ Programme, educators assigned to rural and difficult-to-access areas will receive housing assistance in addition to the financial bonus.
He stated that this policy aims to enhance the appeal of rural assignments and to elevate the quality of teaching and learning at the foundational level.
He clarified that the new initiatives, which were introduced by President John Mahama during the State of the Nation Address, are designed to guarantee that students in disadvantaged communities have equal opportunities to succeed as their peers in urban areas.
“The President has initiated a program that will reward teachers who accept positions in rural settings. These educators will receive an additional 20% on top of their base salary as an incentive,” he remarked.
