Two residents of Tamale in the Northern Region are seriously injured following a clash with the police on Sunday, 13 February 2022.

A police officer allegedly shot a resident who had gone to seek refuge at the Palace of the Lamashegu Chief, leading to bloody riots.

Information gathered by The Ghana Report suggests that the police stopped a young man who was driving an unregistered vehicle.

But he drove off at top speed towards the palace. The police then fired in the car’s direction, hitting one person in the process.

The youth massed up on the streets where they burnt car tyres and pelted police with stones to protest the action of the cops.

Several warning shots could be heard in videos that captured the scenes as the youth faced off with armed police officers.

One other victim suffered cuts on his face, with parts of the flesh hanging, as the gushing blood soaked his shirt and shorts.

Police reinforcements were dispatched to restore calm by dispersing the crowd with water canons.

A joint military and police personnel have been stationed at the scene to prevent further disturbances.

The injured have been sent to the Tamale Teaching Hospital for treatment.

Meanwhile, the Assemblyman for the area, Abubakari Fuseini, has revealed that he is a relative to one victim.

He said he was informed by the chief about the shooting incident and realised the victim was the brother after he rushed to the hospital.

He narrated that the police shot the back of the vehicle, and it hit the victim in the thigh.
