Tamale International Airport To Be Operational On July 31– Transport Minister
The Minister of Transport, Kwaku Ofori Asiamah, has told parliament that the Tamale International Airport is set to be operational at the end of July 2023.
Speaking on the Floor of the House on July 13, the transport minister explained that all preparatory works have been completed and that the government can formally open it to traffic.
“We want to inform this August House that having completed all these, the go live for operationalisation of the new terminal building is scheduled for July 31, 2023,” Mr Asiamah said.
According to him, the terminal was earlier scheduled to be operational in December last year. However, it was postponed to pave the way for completing all requisite training, side acceptance tests and systems integration.
“Subsequently, operational readiness and transfer programme commenced in August 2022 to ensure that potential risk involved in the transition process from construction to the operational phase was carefully managed to avoid poor start-up that can negatively impact the image of the country,” he added.
The government secured funding in 2018 to build a new international airport in Tamale, to serve the growing local and international demands of northern Ghana.
The project includes two international standard terminal buildings befitting the status of the airport as an international airport. It also includes a first-class 5km road linking it with the Tamale-Bolgatanga highway, a new car park, and commercial vehicle parking.
The two terminals are; a special multi-purpose terminal, also known as the Hajj Terminal, and the main terminal for domestic and international flights.
The Hajj terminal has a waiting lounge, check-in and arrival desks, a luggage control area, an ablution and prayer area, and a parking space for 200 cars.
The main terminal for local and international operations is a much bigger facility on a 5,000-metre square space with modern airport facilities.
