A notorious armed robber who has been tormenting the residents of Sekondi-Takoradi in the Western Region has been arrested by some angry civilians.
The suspect, who has only been identified as Nii Addo, ran out of luck on Monday, July 17, while attempting to snatch a mobile phone from someone.
He has reportedly been on a police wanted list for some time for stealing mobile phones from unsuspecting residents on the main Adientem route, near the Sycamore Hospital, with his gang.
The gang members, who normally operate at night on two motorbikes, have put fear in the residents as they have robbed many of them unabated.
However, some residents mustered courage on Monday and apprehended the suspect when he decided to snatch the mobile phone of a Kumasi-based radio presenter at the Takoradi Market Circle.
The victim, Mawuli Ekpe Peter, told journalists that he stepped out of his car around 8:45 pm when two robbers on a motorbike suddenly snatched his iPhone 11 Promax.
With the help of other witnesses, Mawuli chased the duo to another location called Dadzie Bakery.
“I quickly gave them a hot chase along the highway and hit them with my vehicle. They fell into the gutter, and one was able to flee, but the leader was arrested. We realized they had already snatched the bags of four ladies.
“We handed him over to the police, but the other one left with the phone. We got to the police station, and he was already on the wanted list of the police. He is a notorious armed robber who is also alleged to have robbed some residents in Tarkwa,” he indicated.
Nii Addo was reportedly arrested in 2017 for robbery by the Kwesimintsim Police Command.
At the time, he was also accused of being a protégé of the notorious criminal Atta Ayi. It is, however, unclear why he was later released.
