A suspect who was remanded into police custody at Kenyasi in the Ahafo Region has fled from police cells after biting an officer in the cheek.
The suspect, Kwabena Dennis, also threatened officers with a cutlass for attempting to stop him from escaping.
He was scheduled for the Kenyasi Circuit Court on January 17, 2024, on charges of conspiracy to commit a crime, to wit stealing, causing damage, unlawful entry and stealing and possession of a firearm without authority.
But on the night of January 16, Kwabena Dennis is said to have charged towards the exit of the police station wielding a cutlass.
In an attempt to stop his escape, Sergeant Kusi Michael, the station’s NCO, pursued him.
However, he bit Sergeant Kusi on the cheek when he tried to physically restrain him and ran off.
According to reports, the officers in charge of the station have been given a 10-day deadline to produce the escaped prisoner or face disciplinary action, even as investigations continue.
This comes months after eight suspects escaped from their cells at Nkwanta in the Oti Region.
The suspects overpowered a female police officer who was locking up the cells.
The eight, seven males and one female, fled the scene after they forcibly pushed the gate, injuring the officer.
Another police officer who was on duty at the time also sustained injuries.
However, Danjumah Afu, the 20-year-old female suspect, was re-arrested.
Two of the suspects were later re-arrested after the police mounted a manhunt.
