Supreme Court’s counter ruling against Parliament disturbing — Ayine

The Member of Parliament for Bolgatanga East, Dr Dominic Ayine, has criticised a Supreme Court decision overturning the verdict of the Speaker of Parliament on four MPs who crossed carpets.

This follows an ex parte injunction filed by Majority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin at the Supreme Court, seeking a stay of execution of Speaker Bagbin’s ruling in Parliament.

As a result, a five-member panel chaired by the Chief Justice, Justice Gertrude Torkonoo, sat on the case and directed that the four MPs whose seats were declared vacant be re-directed to Parliament to perform their duties.

The MPs directed to reoccupy their seats are Peter Kwakyi Ackah of Amenfi Central, Cynthia Morrison of Agona West, Kwadjo Asante of Suhum, and Andrew Asiamah of Fomena.

Speaking in an interview, the former Deputy Attorney General said, “This is a very disturbing development for them to obtain an ex parte motion, meaning the parliament was not noticed. The order of the Supreme Court means parliament goes back to what it was before the speaker’s ruling.

“Basically, you have tied the heads of Mr Speaker and Parliament; that shows that it is interfering with the work of the legislature. There is a constitutional crisis,” he noted in an interview monitored by The Ghana Report on TV3.

The earlier decision by the Speaker of Parliament triggered the NPP legislators in parliament to boycott parliamentary proceedings on Thursday, October 17, 2024, till further notice.
