Students of Nkanchina Midwifery and Nursing College demand principal’s removal
Students at Nkanchina Midwifery and Nursing College in the Kpandai district of the Northern region are demanding the immediate removal of the principal of the college, alleging mismanagement within the school.
The students, in a protest, alleged that the principal had been disrespecting and mistreating them.
The protestors also cited the deprivation of breakfast and other pressing issues.
The students marched to the office of the District Chief Executive (DCE) for Kpandai, Emmanuel Atta Tatablata, to register their grievances with him.
The DCE subsequently appealed to the students to maintain calm and return to their campus, assuring them that he would intervene and address their grievances.
Student nurses have often been facing a series of challenges in their educational career and even after school, when some are unable to benefit from the posting.
Embarking on strikes is one of the key ways student nurses have been using to advocate for their rights in the profession when they are not being paid after several months.
This ill-treatment meted out against student and graduate nurses compelled them to travel overseas for greener pastures.
About 2,000 nurses working in state and mission health facilities in the country have migrated abroad in recent years, the Ministry of Health has said.
At least 1,400 of the emigrant nurses worked under the Ghana Health Service (GHS), while the remaining 600 worked at facilities of the Christian Health Association of Ghana (CHAG).
The Minister of Health, Kwaku Agyemang-Manu, however said the situation had not significantly challenged work at health facilities.
“We are not getting very serious distress messages from the facilities that if we don’t bring new ones, they can’t work.
We are managing the situation,” the minister added.
