Stop rebuilding at Redco – Madina Assembly warns traders
The La Nkwantanang-Madina Municipal Assembly has issued a strong warning to traders against rebuilding their shops in the Madina Redco slum, which has been declared a security zone due to repeated, destructive fires.
Despite the official restriction, some traders have begun reconstruction efforts after the most recent blaze destroyed their shops.
These traders are now appealing to the government to fast-track investigations and reopen the area so they can resume their livelihoods.
The Assembly, however, insists that anyone found encroaching on the area will be arrested and prosecuted.
Meanwhile, some affected traders are urging authorities not only to sanitize the area but to introduce proper regulation to ensure safe and orderly trading.
They’ve raised fresh concerns about encroachment and disorganization, claiming individuals are attempting to take over spots previously allocated to them.
“We lost everything, and no one came to help us,” one frustrated trader told the media. “Now, others are trying to take our spaces. If we’re going to rebuild, we need to return to our original locations.”
Another trader recounted a specific incident: “Someone placed a 40-foot container here, claiming the land belongs to his mother. We reported it to the Assembly, and they said it would be removed but it’s still here.”
Traders are calling for immediate government intervention to protect their rights and restore order as they seek to rebuild their lives.
