Stop holding yourself as UCC VC – Court orders Prof Nyarko-Boampong
A Cape Coast High Court has granted an injunction against Prof. Johnson Nyarko-Boampong, the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Cape Coast (UCC).
He has since been restrained from acting as Vice-Chancellor pending the final determination of the suit.
This follows a legal challenge by resident John Mevemeo.
Mevemeo contends that the renewal of Prof. Nyarko-Boampong’s appointment until July 31, 2026, violates the 1992 Constitution and UCC’s statutes, as it extends beyond the statutory retirement age of 60.
Prof. Nyarko-Boampong’s current term, which began on August 1, 2020, was set to end on July 31, 2024.
Mevemeo argues that an extension to July 31, 2026, is illegal, given that Prof. Nyarko-Boampong, born on September 18, 1965, should retire by September 18, 2025.
The court will provide reasons for the injunction on Thursday, September 5, 2024.
Meanwhile, the university and the Vice-Chancellor’s lawyers plan to file for a stay of execution.
