Stop defacing public road infrastructure- Road Minister warns public
The Ministry of Roads and Highways has cautioned the public against the unlawful practice of defacing public road infrastructure with the installation of outdoor advertisement structures like billboards, posters, and signposts.
A statement released by the ministry headed by Kwesi Amoako-Atta, dated Tuesday, November 7, highlighted that the practice of defacing public road infrastructure has resulted in a devaluation of the road infrastructure and furniture, poor aesthetics of the public realm, distracting and misinforming drivers.
According to the Roads Ministry, the practice is unacceptable and contravenes provisions of the Ghana Standards Authority’s ‘Advertisement-Specification for Outdoor Signs'(GS 847:2019) in section 5, sections 11 and 15 of Act 540 and section 188 of LI 2180.
“This usually occurs in the form of the installation of outdoor advertisement structures (billboards, signposts, etc.) in the median and inappropriate locations at the intersections of our road network, as well as posting notices on road signs, traffic signs, and traffic controllers,” excerpts of the statement from the Roads and Highways Ministry stated.
Moreover, the ministry called on the Advertising Association of Ghana to enforce its code of conduct with respect to outdoor advertising structures.
All the assemblies in the regions were charged to consult the road agencies at the regional level before issuing permits for advertisements and notices along road corridors.
The ministry further called on the Ghana Police Service to ensure the enforcement of LI 2180 in order to protect and preserve the road infrastructure.
