Stop building under electricity transmission lines – GRIDCo warns

Source The Ghana Report

The Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) has cautioned Ghanaians against building structures under electricity transmission lines.

The company said it poses a risk to lives and properties.

This stern warning from GRIDCo follows the fire incident at Circle ECOMOG, which destroyed numerous wooden structures serving as homes for squatters in the area.

Madam Dzifa Bampoe, the Head of Communications at GRIDCo, addressed the media and some affected victims and emphasized that the habit of building under transmission lines must be stopped.

“Being under these transmission lines is very dangerous. It is not safe for human habitation, and that is why, not just for this particular transmission line but for all our transmission lines, our 161, 225, and 330 KV transmission lines across the country, we go around from time to time and clear people from these transmission lines but those people always come back,” she lamented.

Another personality who spoke to the media on the fire incident was the Greater Accra Regional Minister, Mr Daniel Nii-Kwartei Titus Glover.

He promised that the Regional Coordinating Council, together with the security services, would enforce strict laws to ban people from rebuilding at Circle ECOMOG, directly below GRIDCo’s transmission lines.

“This is a national asset. This is a GRIDCo line that is transmitting power all over. So whoever is living here, you live here at your own peril, and we will make sure we drive away everybody from here.

“This is what we have instructed from now. We will make sure the police are here 24/7. If we see anybody here, we will get them arrested,” he stated.

Meanwhile, the Regional Minister has revealed that the government has no plans of resettling the affected squatters.

He urged the squatters to vacate the place due to the consistent fire outbreaks in the area.
