Chinese-owned pay-TV operator, StarTimes, has reportedly finalised an agreement with the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to take over live broadcasting of the Ghana Premier League (GPL) during the second round of the 2024/25 season.

The deal follows weeks of negotiations between StarTimes and the GFA, marking the company’s return to Ghanaian football after losing the rights last year due to unresolved financial issues with the football governing body.

StarTimes initially secured the GPL broadcast rights in 2016 under a ten-year agreement valued at $17.9 million. However, complications in the partnership led to a suspension of its coverage.

In the absence of StarTimes, the Ghana Premier League this season has been broadcast live on television by Metro TV, Original TV, Net2 TV, and AFA Sports.

With both parties now reaching common ground, StarTimes is set to resume its role as a key broadcaster of Ghana’s top-tier league.

The company’s return is expected to enhance the viewing experience for fans with high-quality broadcasts and improved international visibility for the league.

As the ongoing season approaches the end of its first round, with just two matches remaining, the anticipation for StarTimes’ return grows.

The Ghana FA is expected to come out with a communique on the development soon.
