Members of the Senior Staff Association of Universities of Ghana (SSA-UoG) have commenced a nationwide strike over poor conditions of service.
The nationwide strike started today at the University of Ghana, where members have assembled and are expected to impact universities throughout the country.
The strike was announced after the association expressed concerns regarding the FWSC’s recent changes to the conditions of service for senior university staff, which they describe as unilateral and harmful to staff welfare.
The Fair Wages and Salaries Commission is the government entity responsible for overseeing salaries, wages, and working conditions for public sector employees in Ghana.
Its responsibilities include establishing policies on pay, allowances, and benefits to ensure equity and consistency across government institutions, including universities.
The SSA-UoG stated that the alterations enforced by the commission were made without sufficient consultation with staff and their representatives, leading to the nationwide industrial action.
The strike is expected to disrupt academic and administrative functions, including lectures, examinations, and other university operations.
Authorities and education stakeholders are vigilantly observing the situation as it develops, cautioning that extended industrial action could have broader repercussions for higher education and student welfare.
The association has requested immediate discussions with the FWSC and pertinent government entities to address their issues and restore trust in the management of staff conditions of service.
Until a resolution is achieved, universities nationwide are likely to face considerable disruptions.
