Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the Minister of State-designate for Government Communications, has expressed concerns about the state of sports in Ghana, declaring that the sector is in decline following the Black Stars’ failure to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

For the first time in 20 years, Ghana will not be participating in the AFCON, which will be hosted in Morocco later this year.

The Black Stars, who have won the prestigious tournament four times, ended their qualifying campaign with three draws and three losses, finishing at the bottom of Group F with just three points.

Kwakye Ofosu believes this failure has led to a loss of interest in sports among many Ghanaians.

“In the sporting arena, these days there is little to be enthused about and as a Ghanaian sports fan and I support the Black Stars but we failed to qualify for the AFCON tournament and many Ghanaians have lost interest in what the national teams do,” said on TV3.

He further added, “These days, I claim I support Hearts of Oak but I don’t even know one player of the club nor do I know one player of Asante Kotoko because sports in essentially dead in this country so even rekindling the public interest in sports to support national teams is a difficult task.”

Looking ahead, the Black Stars will resume international action in March when they face Chad and Madagascar in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.
