Sponsors withhold funds for La General Hospital reconstruction – Majority Leader

The Majority Leader in Parliament, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, has attributed the delay in the reconstruction of the La General Hospital to the sponsors’ failure to disburse the funding for the project.

While addressing parliament, Mr Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu said they took the decision after Ghana entered into a deal with the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

“Mr. Speaker, what has happened is that after the engagement with the IMF, funding from those sources that Parliament approved of, the funding has been withheld by the sponsors,” Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu said.

He added that due to the difficulty in securing the funds, the government has decided to add the facility to the Agenda 111 projects.

“Mr. Speaker, until the nation is given a clean bill of health by the IMF, it is going to be difficult for the funding to be released. This is why the government now wants to situate it within the context of Agenda 111, and that will mean that the facility will have to be scaled down a bit,” he said.

The La General Hospital, which was in deplorable condition, was pulled down in March 2020 to make way for the construction of a new one at a cost of 68 million euros.

However, three years down the line, work is yet to commence on the site.
