Sponsors of anti-gay bill hopeful about passage of bill
Sponsors of the Promotion of Proper Sexual Human Rights and Ghanaian Family Values bill are hopeful the legislation seeking to proscribe activities of members of the LGBTQ+ will soon see the light of day.
The sponsors and the Attorney General Godfred Yeboah Dame met the committee on constitutional, legal and parliamentary Affairs yesterday to thrash out some misunderstandings on the bill.
Speaking to the media on behalf of the sponsors of the bill Ningo-Prampram MP, Sam George disclosed the Attorney General categorically stated the bill does not infringe the constitution as claimed by opponents of the legislation.
“On behalf of my colleague’s sponsors and myself yesterday we met with the Committee of Constitutional and Legal Parliamentary Affairs, the respected Attorney General and Minister of Justice to look at his memo which is dated 19th October 2022 on the bill that my colleagues and I sponsored through Parliament.
“The bill on Promotion of Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaians Family Value Bill 2021.
“Let me state on record that the Attorney’s memo dated 19th October 2022 which I hold here agrees largely. I will say about 80 to 85 percent of the memo agrees with the bill. The Attorney General raises some fundamental issues on cost and some human rights issues,” the lawmaker stated.
