The spokesperson for The New Force political movement, Shalimar Abbiusi, has been deported to her native country, Belgium after the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) revoked her permit.

She was deported on Tuesday night after state prosecutors dropped the charges of obtaining a student permit with false declaration and subsequently rearrested her.

Shalimar, according to the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS), indicated in her document that she was a student of the Ghana Christian University College. However, upon intelligence by the state, the claim was found to be false.

Lead counsel for Ms Abbiusi, Francis-Xavier Sosu, who confirmed her exit, described the mode of her deportation as an affront to her fundamental human rights.

“I picked information that sometime last night, she was being escorted to board the Brussels Airline to Belgium. But clearly, this is so shameful and disgraceful.

“Because she was not deported from Ghana, and there was no deportation order by the minister but an Executive Instrument. So, holding her and even denying her access to her lawyers and even her family and escorting her with men in uniform was a violation. When you revoked the person’s visa and said that leave our jurisdiction within 24 hours, she could move from Ghana to Togo. She has the Liberty to move anywhere else that she can go,” he told Citi News.

The 30-year-old Belgian national was hauled before the court on charges related to the alleged falsification of documents to obtain a resident permit in Ghana.

She is said to have violated section 52 (1) (i) of the Immigration Act 2000 (Act 573), specifically “Obtaining for Yourself a Student Permit by False Declaration”.

Her arrest follows an invitation from the Head of the National Enforcement Section at the Immigration Headquarters to address concerns related to her immigration status in Ghana.

Abbiusi’s activities came under the Immigration Service’s scrutiny after she publicly declared herself as The New Force’s spokesperson via social media.

Among other things, the viral video highlighted the suffering of Ghanaians under the Akufo-Addo administration using recent demonstrations to question the role of leadership in addressing the concerns of the citizenry.
