Special Prosecutor summons Juaben MCE over bribery allegation

Rejected Juaben Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) nominee, Alex Sarfo Kantanka, has been hit by multiple woes as he faces the Special Prosecutor for alleged bribery, a day after he was arrested and granted bail by police.

Mr Kantanka’s misfortune seems to be mounting up as he grieves over monies he allegedly doled out to assembly members in exchange for votes he did not get.

The nominee is alleged to have paid an amount of GH¢5,000 to each of the 26 assembly members.

His pain and frustrations may be far from over as the Special Prosecutor opens investigations into his self-confessed bribery of assembly members for his endorsement as the MCE.

“The Office of the Special Prosecutor has commenced investigations into allegations of corruption and corruption-related offences (especially corruption and intimidation in respect of a public election in relation to your nomination and confirmation and otherwise as the Municipal Chief Executive of Juaben Municipality in the Ashanti Region,” a letter dated 2 November 2021, inviting Mr Sarfo-Kantanka said.

The letter signed by the Special Prosecutor, Kissi Agyebeng continued: “The OSP considers you a person necessary for the investigations. You are directed to attend, in person, the offices of the OSP at 6 Haile Selassie Avenue, South Ridge Accra GA-079-0906 on Tuesday 9 November at 2.30 in the afternoon for interviewing. You may be accompanied by counsel of your choice.”

The nominee is captured in a viral video demanding a refund of monies paid to the assembly members to facilitate his endorsement.

This was after he got only 10 votes out of the 26. In the first round, he managed just six.

In the video, he was heard raining curses and threatening some individuals believed to be assembly members who accepted the money but refused to give him the nod during the voting.

He was determined to retrieve his monies leading to a heated exchange which ended up at the palace of the Juaben Omanhene, Nana Otuo Siriboe.
