“Bite the bullet and recall Parliament” – Adei to Bagbin
Economist and former GIMPA Rector, Professor Stephen Adei, has urged Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, to take decisive action and recall Parliament.
He believes a halt of the legislature does not serve Ghana’s national interests.
Professor Adei emphasized the urgency of the situation, stressing that the Speaker should not delay action, especially in such critical times for the country.
“He was my student, and I have seen his leadership firsthand. He is a man of integrity and competence,” Adei shared. “But leadership requires making tough decisions, especially when the nation’s welfare is at stake.”
Professor Adei argued that it would be far more honourable for Speaker Bagbin to take proactive steps to call Parliament back into session rather than waiting for fellow Parliamentarians to press him into action.
He suggested that such a move would solidify Mr Bagbin’s leadership legacy and demonstrate his commitment to Ghana’s democratic process.
“I think he has been a wonderful Speaker, and he should end well,” Adei stated, urging the Speaker to act swiftly for the good of the country.
Highlighting the challenges the nation faces, Adei pointed out that governance requires making difficult, sometimes unpopular decisions in times of crisis.
“In governance, at a certain point, you must bite the bullet and know that this is not in the interest of Ghana for the Speaker to hold out,” Adei stressed, referring to the national importance of addressing pressing issues that cannot wait.
The former GIMPA Rector further emphasized that although the political landscape can often be unpredictable, he believes in Speaker Bagbin’s ability to navigate the situation and make the right choice.
“Politicians are unpredictable, but I know that Bagbin will come through. He is capable,” Adei affirmed.
The call for immediate action comes amidst growing concerns over national issues that demand swift parliamentary intervention.
Professor Adei’s comments underscore the necessity for leaders to prioritize the country’s welfare, even when it requires stepping outside their comfort zones.
