The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has reminded political actors ahead of the December elections that they do not have the choice to hold on to power.

Speaking to journalists at Tamale, during an engagement with the Northern Region branch of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), Mr Bagbin said the Constitution of Ghana clearly states who has the ultimate choice to decide who stays in power.

According to the Speaker, the power belongs to the people of Ghana.

“Those, who make utterances that they won’t hand over power, will have no choice but to do so because the Constitution says so, and the power is with the people,” he stated.

Speaking on Parliament’s role in ensuring peaceful elections, he said the House is fully committed to the electoral process.

Mr Bagbin also explained the rigorous processes behind the passage of the Affirmative Action (Gender Equity) Bill.

He said passing such controversial bills requires serious scrutiny, stakeholder engagement and budget approvals which often delay the process.

Mr Bagbin’s reminder comes when various political parties have intensified their campaigns ahead of the crucial 2024 elections.

Some opposition parties have alleged that the ruling party may not be willing to hand over power if it does not emerge victorious on December 7.

Meanwhile, President Akufo-Addo has assured Ghanaians that he will oversee a successful election and peacefully hand over power at the end of his tenure.
