Speak for angry Ghanaians— Mahama charges Assin North electorate

Former Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama has called on the electorate in the Assin North constituency to vote wisely in the upcoming by-election and reflect the current economic hardships in the country.

The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) leader labelled NDC’s James Gyakye Quayson as a loyal and truthful person and urged voters not to exchange their destiny for anything.

Mr Mahama also called for the rejection of what he called lies and propaganda from the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP).

“He did nothing wrong to deserve this treatment from the NPP government. In the history of this country, this is the first time a sitting Member of Parliament was barred from performing his parliamentary duty by our Supreme Court. This should tell you how active politics has eaten into our judiciary” Former President Mahama charged constituents at various community durbars at Ahuntem, Achiano, Kushea, Gangan and Ningo to wrap up the NDC’s campaign for the by-election.

He expressed optimism that the electorate would reaffirm their vote for Mr Quayson, who was removed from Parliament by the Supreme Court for political reasons.

“This by-election is God’s design and must not be taken for granted. GOD has allowed you to speak on behalf of all Ghanaians before 2024. In the unlikely situation the NPP candidate wins, it will be a dent on you as constituency’, he said.

The Assin North by-election has become necessary after the Supreme Court ordered Parliament to expunge Mr Quayson’s name as a lawmaker following an allegation of dual citizenship.

The state has also proceeded to press charges of perjury and deceit of a public officer charges against Mr Quayson.
