South African Minister to visit Ghana amid DStv pricing dispute
South Africa’s Minister of International Relations is expected in Ghana this week as diplomatic efforts ramp up to resolve the escalating standoff between Ghana’s Ministry of Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations and MultiChoice Ghana, operators of DStv.
The high-level visit follows a firm ultimatum issued by Ghana’s Communications Minister, Samuel Nartey George, who warned that DStv’s operating licence could be suspended by Wednesday, August 7, if the company fails to adjust its subscription prices to meet regulatory expectations.
This was confirmed by Charles Owiredu, Deputy Ranking Member of Parliament’s Information and Communications Committee.
He said the South African minister’s visit aims to help ease tensions and open a diplomatic path toward resolution, amid growing public pressure for lower DStv fees.
“The South African Minister is scheduled to arrive in Ghana to engage directly with our Foreign Minister on this issue. We must resolve this through diplomatic channels not threats or confrontations. That approach benefits no one,” Mr. Owiredu said.
The visit marks a significant diplomatic step in what has become a high-profile dispute between a sovereign government ministry and a foreign-owned media company operating in Ghana.
