No more secret spending — Mahama warns GFA boss
Ghana’s sports sector is experiencing a sharp decline, with poor performances in international competitions raising serious concerns, particularly about football management.
Amid growing frustrations, President John Dramani Mahama has pledged to introduce transparency and accountability measures in sports administration.
“There will be no secrecy in how much the government spends on the national teams; I have directed that the Ghana Football Association (GFA) be held accountable,” President Mahama stated during his State of the Nation Address (SONA) on Thursday, February 27, 2025.
The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has been under heavy criticism following a string of disappointing results from the country’s national teams.
The Black Stars’ failure to qualify for the next Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) has only deepened concerns about mismanagement and the lack of oversight within the organization.
To address these issues, President Mahama reiterated his commitment to reforming the sector and ensuring that funds allocated to sports are properly managed.
He emphasized that his government would take firm measures to prevent financial mismanagement and restore confidence in sports administration.
In addition to enforcing accountability, Mr. Mahama assured Ghanaians of his government’s commitment to revitalizing sports infrastructure across the country.
“The government is committed to refurbishing existing sports stadia and building more youth resource centres,” he said, stressing the need to develop local talent and rebuild Ghana’s reputation in sports.
His administration’s efforts aim to create a more structured and efficient sports sector, offering better opportunities for athletes while restoring the nation’s standing in global competitions.
