Social media troll Hawa Koomson for ‘locking’ sea

The Minister for Fisheries and Aquaculture, Mavis Hawa Koomson, has been trolled for putting the sea under ‘lock and key.

In a viral video, recorded in Keta on June 30, 2021, the minister was seen in the company of some traditional leaders with a wooden key locking the sea ostensibly to close the fishing season.

The key, according to report, was used as a symbol to mark the closed season for fishing.

The close season is part of measures to help protect fish stocks when they are reproducing.

“This close season was based on scientific advice and consultation with various Fisheries associations in the country,” the minister said

According to her, it is highly expected that this strategy will enable the sector to achieve the desired long-term objective of stock recovery.

But some social media users have raised concerns about the significance of the wooden key and why the Minister turned the key clockwise instead of anticlockwise which indicates locking.
