Snatchers escape death after crashing vehicle in Ajumako

A group of suspected phone snatchers narrowly escaped death after their getaway vehicle was involved in an accident and landed in a ditch at Ajumako in the Ajumako Enyan Essiam District of the Central Region.

Information gathered indicates that the suspects, believed to be about five in number, had been operating in various communities within the district, stealing mobile phones, bags, and money from unsuspecting victims.

The most recent incident occurred near the Ajumako Government Hospital, where the criminals targeted a newly posted nurse.

While she was returning home from work in the evening, the suspects approached her, claiming she was facing a spiritual problem and that they could help her overcome it.

Trusting their words, she engaged in a conversation with them, only for them to snatch her mobile phone, bag, and an undisclosed sum of money before fleeing.

After the attack, the nurse raised an alarm, prompting residents to chase the assailants.

The suspects attempted to escape in a private car with registration number CR-1784-12 but while speeding along the Ajumako-Nkwantanum road, they lost control, crashed into an electricity pole, and plunged into a ditch.

By the time onlookers reached the crash site, the criminals had vanished, leaving behind their damaged vehicle.

A search of the car revealed school bags, multiple mobile phones, clothing, shoes, food items, and voter ID cards suspected to belong to people from the Volta Region, along with empty wallets.

Eyewitnesses reported that before the crash, the suspects had initially claimed to be pastors on their way to a crusade.

However, it soon became clear that they were criminals.

Angry residents, frustrated by the frequent thefts in the area, attempted to set the vehicle on fire, but police officers intervened to restore order.

The case has since been reported to the Ajumako police for further investigation.

However, as of the time of filing this report, no arrests had been made.
