‘Sleepy driver’ kills policeman in gory crash at Winneba-Kasoa checkpoint
A police officer on night duty at a police checkpoint at Kantanka Junction on the Winneba to Kasoa Highway in the Central Region has been crushed to death by three vehicles.
The Incident happened on Friday, June 21, 2024, at around 11 p.m.
Information gathered indicates that the accident involved three vehicles – a Kia truck with regulation number GR-6419-N, a trailer with registration number GE-5468-22 and a fuel tanker having the registration number GY-2186-13.
The overspeeding Kia truck, which was heading towards Mankessim Road, is said to have hit the police checkpoint barricade and subsequently hit the trailer and the fuel tanker, packed on the shoulders of the road.
The truck further and ran over the police officer.
It is believed the driver of the truck driver was sleeping, leading to the accident.
Three persons who were on board sustained injuries. and are receiving treatment at the Winneba Trauma and Specialist Hospital.
Meanwhile, the body of the deceased police officer has been deposited at the same hospital’s mortuary for autopsy and preservation.
The case has been reported to the police for investigation.
The crash occurred when windy and dusty weather conditions interfered with Sergeant Frempah’s vision, causing him to lose control of the motorbike and crash with a vehicle.
Sergeant Frempah Bismark was reportedly going to meet a musician for a show.
He was formerly stationed at the Ministry for the Interior.
The officer was chasing an Okada rider with his motorcycle for flouting traffic regulations but hit the back of a stationary truck with registration number GM 445-13.
