Six police officers test positive for coronavirus
A total of eight security personnel in the Central Region have tested positive for the dreaded coronavirus, Regional Police Commander, COP Paul Manly Awini, has confirmed.
Six of the infected persons are police personnel, and two are Community Protection Assistants.
COP Awini disclosed the development during the launch of the Central Region Nationwide Police Facilities Disinfection exercise to be carried out by Zoomlion Ghana Limited
COP, however, noted that two of the infected police officers have recovered and tested negative after treatment.
The others are being managed at a treatment centre in the region.
Following the development, he said the police have instituted measured to ensure the safety of its staff.
In total, there are about 104 police facilities that are expected to be disinfected by Zoomlion in the Central Region.
The exercise, which will last for five days, is part of measures by the Ghana Police Service to fight and contain the spread of the novel coronavirus disease.
It is a collaboration between the Police Administration and Zoomlion.
Training schools, police stations, markets, offices, cells and barracks in the region will be fumigated.
On his part, the Central Regional Minister, Kwamena Duncan, charged the Interior Minister to conduct such exercises by disinfecting all police and prison facilities quarterly.
A total of 156 new COVID-19 cases have been recorded, bringing Ghana’s total case count to 6,964.
Some 2,097 people have also recovered from the disease, with the death toll at 32.
