The arrests and subsequent trial were a result of intelligence gathered by the National Security Council following an incident on September 25, 2020, where members of the WTRF blocked roads, set fire to vehicles, and attacked police stations in Juapong, Sogakope, Aveyime, and Mepe.

The WTRF is a splinter group from the Homeland Study Group Foundation, with the aim of seceding from the Republic of Ghana.

Incriminating evidence, such as flags, stickers, and weapons, was found in their possession.
