Sisters Keepers Association condemns murder of 90-year-old woman

Sisters Keepers Association, a non-governmental organisation, has condemned the murder of a 90-year-old woman accused of witchcraft in the Savannah Region.

“The Association highly condemns the inhumane treatment meted out to the old woman and, therefore, call on the necessary law enforcement agencies to as a matter of urgency investigate the matter and bring the perpetrators of this heinous crime to book,” it said in a statement.

In a viral video, a crowd cheered on as a middle-aged woman,  and her accomplice alleged to be a soothsayer battered the old woman.

The soothsayer allegedly accused the 90-year-woman, Mariama Akua Denteh, for being the witch preventing rain from falling at Kafaba, a farming community, in the East Gonja Municipality of the Savannah Region.

Residents of the community had complained of a lack of rains for farmers to cultivate their produce.

The leaders allegedly invited a soothsayer to deliver the town from its woes and the old woman was named as the cause of the community’s calamities.

Holding whips and what appeared to be a wooden board, two women in the video battered her while the crowd cheered.

Reacting to the incident, the association called for the arrest of the perpetrators.

“Sisters Keepers Association would want to assure the general public that we have taken a keen interest in this issue and will pursue it till the actors involved are brought to book to serve as a deterrent to others”

“The Association wishes to bring to the notice of the public that Alzheimer /Dementia is a condition among the elderly, therefore, the need to have enough knowledge about this disease to inform our relationship with them in these times,” the statement said.

Meanwhile, the Inspector General of Police (IGP), James Oppong-Boanuh, has placed a GHC2,000-bounty on the head of the soothsayer who allegedly led the murder of the  90-year-old woman.

The soothsayer and her accomplice stormed the East Gonja Municipality of the region to drive out witches, accused of hampering the progress of the town folks.
