Dr. Matilda Amissah, the sister of 29-year-old Charles Amissah, has called for urgent reforms in Ghana’s emergency healthcare system following her brother’s tragic death.

Charles, an engineer with Promasidor Ghana Limited, sustained severe shoulder injuries in a hit-and-run accident at the Circle Overpass in Accra on February 6, 2026.

Speaking in an interview, Dr. Amissah shared the heartbreak her family endured, noting the challenges Charles faced in receiving timely care.

“Until later on, we realised that the National Ambulance Service picked him up and went to three facilities close to three hours, and nobody saw him,” she said, recounting how her brother was turned away from several hospitals due to unavailable beds.

Dr. Amissah urged the government to strengthen emergency response services, especially in smaller health facilities, to prevent similar tragedies.

“I think that we also have to equip the other small facilities to be able to handle emergency cases like these. We are hopeful that the government will come in to help the healthcare system and strengthen healthcare,” she added.

She highlighted the importance of a strong triage system so doctors can intervene immediately when lives are at stake.

Describing Charles as a quiet, loving man and the backbone of the family, she said, “He was the backbone of the house, supported my mum and everything”.

“Because he was an engineer, he could dismantle and put things back together with a twinkle of an eye.”

Despite the grief, the family is drawing strength from their faith as they support their mother.

Funeral preparations are underway, with the service scheduled for Friday at the Methodist Church at Adenta in Accra.
