Singing competition shows are beneficial for upcoming artists, says Mr Drew

Ghanaian Afrobeats musician Andrew Nii Commey Otoo, known by the stage name Mr Drew, has shed some light on the importance of music reality shows to upcoming artists.

Speaking to RazaSwaggy on Asaase Cape Coast’s Rush Hour #celebchitchat segment” on Thursday (27 June), the “Sneaky” crooner sang the praises of music competitions and talent shows.

Mr Drew, who rose to fame in 2017 after emerging as the first runner-up in season six of the MTN Hitmaker show, explained that there are so many opportunities that participants in such shows can benefit from.

According to him, these shows are very impactful and play a major role in shaping the careers of a lot of participating artists.

He mentioned that the shows give publicity and exposure to artists because, for the duration of the competition, they are constantly in the limelight, and therefore, it is a great source of marketing and building a fan base.

“The role of judges is to mould the participants into artists that can make impacts globally,, hence the seemingly harsh approach.”

Mr Drew mentioned that these shows are a good place to build invaluable networks, while participants also get the opportunity to meet with their idols and other stakeholders in the industry.

He advised those who participate in these shows to believe in themselves and not let the outcome of the competition determine the heights they reach in life.

“No matter what the judges say, you can still move on and excel in life.”
