Showdown in parliament enters day 2 as minority fights back

The political standoff in Parliament extended into a second day of intense confrontations as the Minority pushed back the activities of the Majority during the vetting of ministerial nominees.

This disruption followed a dramatic scene the previous day when tensions boiled over during the vetting of the minister-designate for Communications, Digitalisation, and Innovation, Sam George.

The confrontation reached a breaking point during the vetting of Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, today, January 31, 2025, with Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin accusing the Clerk of the Appointments Committee, Gifty Jiagge-Gobah, of partisan bias in favour of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

The Minority and Majority clashed over whether to proceed with the session or reschedule it, with Afenyo-Markin alleging that Jiagge-Gobah had unfairly manipulated the vetting schedule to benefit the NDC.

“The nominees must be questioned, and we will ensure that happens,” Afenyo-Markin insisted.

“Some nominees were questioned for only five minutes. The NDC always resorts to intimidation and bullying, but we will not accept it. They call us a micro-minority, yet we have cooperated. However, the Clerk to the Committee is clearly partisan, siding with the NDC and improperly announcing meetings. On January 29, there was no consensus, yet at 10 pm, she went ahead and advertised the session.”
