Show leadership and stop lamenting—Amin Adam replies Mahama
Former finance minister under the erstwhile Akufo-Addo administration, Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam, has urged President John Dramani Mahama to take full responsibility as head of state and rejuvenate the economy rather than pointing fingers at the previous government.
Dr. Amin Adam’s remarks follow President Mahama’s criticisms of his predecessor during his inaugural State of the Nation Address (SONA), where he highlighted the economic struggles left by the previous New Patriotic Party (NPP) government, including significant debt concerns.
Dr. Amin Adam recalled how former President Akufo-Addo faced a challenging economic situation when he took office from President Mahama in 2016.
According to him, in the face of these challenges, former President Akufo-Addo demonstrated strong leadership qualities.
In view of that, he has encouraged President Mahama to do the same.
“Mahama handed over 74% GDP [Gross Domestic Product] debt sustainability to the Akufo-Addo administration. He accepted his responsibility. He didn’t say that because of these debts, he is not going to provide leadership. This is what I expect President Mahama to do,” he stated.
“Let’s look at the state of the economy now and before NDC left power in 2016. An economy that grew at 7.2% in the Third Quarter, and by the end of the year when the fiscal data is presented, you will see above 6% compared to the 3% Mahama left office with”.

“If you look at what Akufo-Addo inherited from Mahama and didn’t run away and provided leadership with an economy faced with the Russia-Ukraine war, COVID-19, and still ended his term with all these figures compared to Mahama, I think he [Mahama] should stop this lamentation and go ahead and take leadership.”
Meanwhile, President Mahama has reassured Ghanaians of his commitment to resolving the economic issues, aiming to alleviate the difficulties faced by Ghanaians.
