A 24-year-old shop attendant has been arrested for locking up a staff of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) in her shop.
The staff was a monitoring officer who had visited the shop with a team to audit a prepaid meter.
The team noticed that the shop was reconnected to the power grid after ECG had disconnected it for engaging in a meter bypass.
Veronica Ansah, the attendant, had allegedly locked the officer in the shop following an order by the owner, Enoch Kwafo.
After they locked him up, the two called a mob to attack the officer.
He was, however, rescued by colleagues who had visited nearby shops.
They reported to the police, and the shop attendant was arrested.
According to Dr Mark Owusu Ansah, the Accra West Regional Revenue Protection Manager of ECG, “The customer had reconnected power to his shop on three previous occasions despite a bill slapped on him for engaging in illegal connection.”
He said the shop owed Gh¢10,517.53 in debts.
“The customer has not approached us to clear this debt and keeps reconnecting himself anytime we disconnect him,” Dr Ansah said.
Meanwhile, the Accra West General Manager, Ebenezer Ghunney, said ECG is liaising with the security agencies to ensure that anyone who impedes the work of its field staff is punished.
