President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo on Monday, June 12, swore in Gertrude Torkornoo, as the new Chief Justice.

The president administered the oath of office to Ghana’s new Chief Justice at a brief ceremony at the Jubilee House.

The swearing-in attracted a distinguished gathering of dignitaries, including Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the Chief of Staff Akosua Frema Osei-Opare, former President John Agyekum Kuffuor, former Justices of the Supreme Court, and members of the diplomatic corps.

Justice Torkonoo assumes the position of Chief Justice following the mandatory retirement of Justice Anin Yeboah on Wednesday, May 24.

With her appointment, she becomes the third female Chief Justice in the history of the country, marking a significant milestone for gender representation in Ghana’s judiciary.

President Akufo-Addo, in his remarks during the ceremony, expressed confidence in Justice Torkonoo’s ability to steer the judiciary in the right direction.

He emphasized the importance of upholding the rule of law and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to supporting the judiciary’s autonomy and independence.

President Akufo-Addo believes her vast experience and legal expertise position her well to address pressing issues within the judiciary and work towards enhancing the efficiency and accessibility of justice for all citizens.

“I have no doubt that Justice Torkornoo will be an effective leader of the judiciary, zealous and be a worthy successor to former chief justice Anin Yeboah. I am expectant that her tenure will be marked by order, fairness and rule of law,” the president said.

In her acceptance speech, the newly appointed Chief Justice said she is deeply humbled and grateful for the nomination.

“As I stand before you today, I am well aware that I am following in the footsteps of remarkable individuals who have occupied this position before me. The Chief Justices who have come before me, with their wisdom, dedication, and unwavering commitment to justice, have laid a strong foundation for me to build upon.

“I acknowledge that I stand on extremely tall shoulders, and I pledge to carry their legacy forward with utmost respect and diligence,” she said.

She was approved by Parliament on June 7, 2023, after the Appointments Committee submitted its report.

Both sides of the house agreed she possessed the qualifications necessary to serve as Chief Justice.
