Several schemes at play to oust me from my position – Adwoa Safo

Member of Parliament for Dome-Kwabenya, Sarah Adwoa Safo, has bemoaned the lack of support from her party leadership in her absence from official duties.

The Minister for Gender, Children, and Social Protection, who has been away from official duties for the most part of the year now, took to her official Facebook page on Sunday, July 17, 2022, to lament the ill-treatment meted to her.

Speaking on the theme for the NPP’s 2022 National Delegates Conference held on July 16, 2022, the  Minister said “The theme for this year’s Conference, Holding Together, Working Together resonates so much with my current circumstances and brings back memories of my time as the Deputy Majority Leader in the 7th Parliament where, as Leader of the Women’s Caucus, together with the Leadership of the Majority did our very best to protect a colleague female Member of Parliament who had to be away in London for close to two years to take care of family issues,” she said.

The MP stated her situation is similar to that of her colleague.

According to her, she, unfortunately, has become a victim of a sustained political witch hunt by certain elements in the NPP and in Parliament to achieve their own selfish goals.

Ms. Safo insisted that despite her service to the party, both in opposition and in government, she is being vilified.

” At no point in time have myself nor my family withheld anything of ours from our great party, yet today, I am conveniently being called a traitor and all manner of names with several schemes being put to play and employed to oust me from my position as MP and Minister,” the post read.

Ms. Safo further reminded members of NPP to stay united and not give up on anyone in their quest to break the eight.

She reiterated her unwavering commitment to the New Patriotic Party and the government of Nana Akufo Addo.

Absenteeism Probe

The Legislator has been absent from her official duties for the major part of the year attending to family issues in the USA.

There have been several failed attempts by the Parliamentary Privileges Committee to reach the Minister who has been absent from her Gender Ministry and Parliament for more than 15 parliamentary sittings.

At the last sitting of the committee on Wednesday, July 13, 2022, Ms. Adwoa Safo allegedly ignored the zoom link sent to her for the privileges committee meeting.

The Ranking Member of the Parliamentary Committee, Mr. Ricketts-Hagan,  stated that on the grounds of natural justice, the committee could not make any decision on Ms. Safo due to her failure to appear before the committee but rather will subject her to the plenary for MPs to decide on her faith after the committee had submitted their report to the Speaker of Parliament.
