Several residents seriously injured in renewed chieftaincy clashes at Tamale
Some residents have reportedly been injured in a renewed chieftaincy dispute at Yong Dakpemyili in the Tamale Metropolis of the Northern Region.
Assemblyman for the community, Abdul Wahab Dawuda, who confirmed the incident, said the clash was between supporters of Fuseini Chemsi and Mohammed Chemsi over the handing over of a staff of authority ceremony, which was supposed to have taken place on Thursday, May 18.
The clash resulted in sporadic gunshots, forcing most people to stay indoors for their safety while others suffered various degrees of injury.
“There were some gunshots as a result of two brothers feuding over a chieftaincy title. One side was to perform some particular traditional activity, and some people sustained some injuries, but there is currently calm in the community, but we don’t know what may happen next,” the Assemblyman said in a radio interview.
However, he was unable to give the exact number of the injured people.
Meanwhile, police in the region are investigating the incident.
There has been a long-standing dispute between the two brothers over who is the rightful person to occupy the Yong skin for years.
This has led to several crashes in the past, with both sides recording deaths, injuries and the destruction of properties running into several thousands of Ghana cedis.
In April 2022, one person was killed, three others were injured, and four houses were burnt in a renewed clash between the factions.
