Residents of Miawani, an island community on the Volta Lake in the Pru East District of the Bono East Region, have been rendered homeless after a rainstorm induced havoc.
The downpour that hit last Thursday, April 13, destroyed several buildings and the only basic school in the community.
This has forced about 400 residents to sleep in the open, while pupils in the community have abandoned school.
Meanwhile, officials from the Pru East District Assembly and the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) are yet to visit the place since the incident happened.
Residents lamented that they are still counting their losses following the rainstorm, and it will take time for life to return to normal on the island.
Therefore, the residents have appealed for support since the situation does not look promising.
“Since the incident happened, no official from the Pru East District Assembly or NADMO has visited us to find out about what has happened to us. Where to sleep is a big problem. Therefore, we are calling on the District Assembly to come to our aid,” a resident, Ebenezer Duniah, appealed.
However, the District Chief Executive for Pru East, Alhaji Abdulai Adams, told journalists that the assembly was still arranging for a boat to visit the victims.
“We have arranged for a boat and will be visiting the victims,” he assured.
