Seven soldiers remanded over civilian deaths in Kumasi
The Suame District Court has remanded seven military officers, including some senior personnel and a driver, for allegedly assaulting several civilians, which resulted in the tragic deaths of two individuals.
The officers are accused of attacking three young men who were detained on March 28, 2025, and taken to the 4th Infantry Battalion barracks.
Subsequently, two of these men were discovered dead in a bush in Danyame, a neighborhood in Kumasi.
According to police reports, the victims—Kwame Adu, known as Ogee, Kwabena Sarfo, and Christian Obiri Yeboah, often referred to as Kofi Yesu—were apprehended by military officers on suspicion of stealing another civilian’s iPhone.
They were allegedly assaulted at the barracks before being left at Danyame.
Police were alerted to the location of the bodies, and officers from the Suame Division took their bodies to the mortuary at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital.
The families of Kwame Adu and Kwabena Sarfo were later able to identify the deceased after filing missing person reports with the authorities.
Christian Obiri Yeboah, the only survivor who is currently receiving medical care, recounted the severe beatings they endured at the barracks.
The officers have now been charged with murder and conspiracy to commit murder and appeared in the Suame District Court on Tuesday.
Police prosecutors requested that they be kept in prison custody while investigations continue, but their attorneys contended that they should instead be held by Military Police.
The presiding judge decided to remand the accused in Military Police custody.
Meanwhile, families of the victims are demanding justice in this distressing case as they attend court proceedings.
The officers will remain in Military Police custody until the next scheduled hearing on April 22, 2025.
