Set up independent committee to probe Godenu incident – Gbi Chiefs to president

The Gbi Traditional Council has called on President Akufo-Addo and the Inspector General of Police(IGP) to set up an independent committee of inquiry to probe a recent disturbance at Godenu, near Hohoe in the Volta Region.

Two people died while others sustained injuries after the residents clashed with the police on August 30, 2023.

Some residents also set a Police patrol vehicle ablaze.

According to a police statement, 12 people were arrested and one Bruni pistol was retrieved.

Addressing a press conference in Hohoe, the Paramount Chief of the Gbi Traditional Area, Togbega Gabusu VII said this incident is not the first of its kind in the area.

Togbe Keh XII, who spoke on his behalf said there have been past incidents which were not investigated.

“Having carefully considered the trend of events in the Gbi Traditional Area over the past years, on behalf of the district, we are calling on the President of the Republic of Ghana to immediately and as a matter of urgency set up an independent committee of inquiry to investigate all past and current events of police brutality and killings of innocent citizens in the district

“The findings, your Excellency, hopefully should be made available to the Gbi State within 90 days from the date of this press conference,” he said.
