The National Chairman of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Samuel Ofosu Ampofo says the absence of a running mate for the party’s flagbearer, John Mahama, at the moment is not a cause for concern.

He told Citi News that the party is not behind schedule when it comes to the selection of a running mate.

“In previous elections, we always selected the running mate about six months to the election. We are in 2019. We are not even in 2020,” he said in response to such concerns.

A number of names have popped up in connection with the running mate slot.

Last week, there was some speculation and reports that Ghana’s longest-serving Finance Minister, Professor Kwesi Botchwey had been chosen as running mate.

But the reports were quickly refuted by Mr. Mahama.

Mr. Ofosu Ampofo noted that the party has a laid down structure and will come up with a running mate at the appropriate time.

“People can put up names but the National Executive Committee has the responsibility and a road map. In the roadmap, we have not gotten to the running mate [selection]. Let’s get our Parliamenary candidates first. Let’s put the right structures in place. It is not long overdue at all.”

The NDC held it’s parliamentary primaries over the weekend ahead of the 2020 elections.
