The Minority Caucus has condemned the National Security for raiding the house of former Bank of Ghana (BoG) Governor, Dr. Ernest Addison, on Wednesday, March 19, 2025.

According to the Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, the operatives, led by Richard Jakpa, Director of Special Operations at the National Security Secretariat, took away an undisclosed amount of cedis from Dr. Addison’s bedroom.

He also alleged that the team stole other valuable possessions, including the jewellery belonging to the wife of Dr. Addison.

Addressing the media on Thursday, March 20, Afenyo-Markin condemned the raid as unlawful and an abuse of power.

He urged President John Mahama to promptly intervene regarding the actions of those involved.

“Some GHC10,000 on his bed could not be found. So some of these hungry party foot soldiers they use, who parade themselves as National Security Operatives, are after all perhaps not being paid, and they use this opportunity to steal.

“The governor’s wife’s earrings and necklaces were also not traced. They couldn’t be found. In other words, those operatives stole these earrings and necklaces. Ghana is a mature democracy, and we should do better,” he said.

The raid at Dr. Addison’s private residence in Roman Ridge, Accra, has raised significant alarm over the conduct of security forces under the current government.

It is reported that heavily armed officers, some donning balaclavas and carrying AK-47 rifles, disabled the CCTV systems before conducting their search.

Afenyo-Markin further noted that this incident appears to be part of a broader pattern, referencing a similar raid on former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta’s home in February 2025.

He called on civil society organisations and human rights advocates to condemn what he characterised as a troubling trend of political persecution.

As of now, the government and the National Security Secretariat have yet to respond to these allegations.

Meanwhile, there are increasing calls for an independent investigation into the raid and the behaviour of the security personnel involved.
