Security forces arrest men at former MCE’s residence in Nkwanta

A joint security force has detained several young men at the residence of Lenwah Kwame Bright, the former Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) of Nkwanta.

The arrest took place amidst growing tensions and violent clashes in the Nkwanta South Municipality, which have displaced hundreds of residents and left the area in turmoil.

While the identities of the arrested individuals and the reasons for their presence at the former MCE’s residence remain unclear, the incident has added to concerns surrounding the ongoing unrest.

The violence, sparked by a long-standing ethnic dispute between the Akyode, Adele, and Challa groups, has led to the deaths of seven people and forced around 200 residents to flee their homes.

Additionally, eight homes and shops were destroyed in the clashes, leaving parts of the township abandoned.

The conflict intensified when armed men disrupted a burial ceremony, causing gunfire to erupt and forcing mourners to flee.

In response to the violence, military personnel have been deployed in Nkwanta, with armoured vehicles stationed strategically throughout the town to help restore order.

However, the military’s presence has generated mixed reactions from locals, some of whom fear potential human rights violations.

As the security situation remains tense, residents and authorities continue to grapple with the impact of the ongoing conflict.
