Deputy Attorney General (AG), Dr. Justice Srem Sai, has defended the recent National Security raid on the residence of a former Bank of Ghana (BoG) governor, insisting that all procedures were carried out lawfully.

Speaking on the matter, Dr. Srem Sai assured the public that the government remained committed to retrieving looted state assets while ensuring due process.

“Every search conducted is part of the government’s anti-corruption efforts. Warrants were properly procured before the searches were carried out, and they were done within legal boundaries,” he explained days after armed men stormed the residence of Dr Ernest Addison.

The AG acknowledged the divided public opinion on the approach, with some believing the government is being too aggressive and others accusing it of moving too slowly.

However, he emphasised that his administration will not rush prosecutions without solid evidence.

“We will not engage in the practice of dragging people to court first and searching for evidence later. The public may see this as a delay, but we are making sure we do things the right way.”

Dr. Srem Sai also highlighted instances where individuals were unlawfully arrested or subjected to lengthy trials without sufficient evidence and reiterated that such missteps would not be repeated.

“There have been instances in the past where people were arrested unlawfully or put on trial for years without evidence. We will not put anyone before the court unless we have sufficient evidence to prosecute them,” he added.

The recent raid has sparked widespread debate, but the Deputy Attorney General maintains that the government is working diligently to hold accountable those suspected of misappropriating state resources while ensuring that the rule of law prevails.
