Mobile Money Advocacy Group Ghana (MOMAG) and other Mobile Money (MoMo) agents have threatened to shut down their operations over the imposition of an E-Levy on agent SIM cards by the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA).
According to a statement by the group, this, in addition to the existing 10 percent income tax on all transactions, is resulting in double taxation for their businesses.
The operators said that despite engaging with GRA to address their concerns, members have yet to see any positive outcome.
“The imposition of the e-levy on agent SIM cards and the 1% levy on all push and pull transactions from banks are creating an unsustainable financial burden for mobile money agents.
“The current situation is untenable, and if not addressed promptly, we risk losing all our capital due to the heavy burden of double taxation,” MOMAG said.
They added that if the government fails to call the GRA to order, they will have no option but to shut down their shops and go on demonstrations to safeguard their capital and livelihood.
“This will have far-reaching implications for the mobile money industry and the economy at large.”
